When I travel, I always put a glass and a piece of paper in the sink. Here’s why this trick makes all the difference!

The miracle solution: a simple water jet

Fortunately, solving this problem is incredibly simple. Just run the tap for a few seconds to fill the siphon. When the water fills the trap, the foul smells almost instantly disappear.

But it is always better to prevent than to cure. To keep your home fresh while you’re away, here are two simple tips I use now every time I travel, even for a weekend.

Tip #1: Place a sheet of paper... and a glass!

A common misconception is to pour oil into the sink to slow the evaporation of water. Unfortunately, dried oil can harden and stick, resulting in even worse obstructions and odors. Instead, try this smart trick:

  • Step 1: Cover the opening of the sink with a sheet of paper. This creates a gentle barrier that reduces the evaporation of siphon water.
  • Step 2 : Place a glass or a small plate on the paper. Together, they act as a makeshift lid, effectively sealing the sink without damaging your plumbing.

This method is not only simple and economical, but also surprisingly effective in keeping these bad odors away.

Tip #2: Never completely empty the toilet tank

Another mistake people sometimes make is emptying the toilet tank before leaving the house. While it may seem logical to conserve water, it can actually cause problems. Without water in the tank, the rubber seals inside the toilet can dry out, which can cause leaks when you return and restart the water supply.

Instead, simply close the water tap behind the toilet. Leave a small amount of water in the bowl and tank to keep the joints moist and prevent cracks. This ensures that everything works smoothly when you return.

A house that smells good even after days of absence

There’s nothing worse than coming home from vacation and coming across suspicious smells hiding in your home. With these two simple precautions – a piece of paper and a glass for the sink, as well as a little water left in the toilet – you can have peace of mind knowing that your home will remain odorless while you’re away.

No sophisticated equipment or expensive product is required, just a few household items and a few minutes of preparation. Your future I will thank you!

Final reflections

The next time you pack for a trip, don’t forget your sink and toilet. These small, impactful measures can really make a difference in maintaining a fresh and welcoming home. So try them, you will be glad you did!
